Leadership Evolution
Where does leadership come from, and how do people become leaders? Contrary to the belief of some, leadership is not inherited, it is not a trait youâre born with, and itâs not something you can read a book on and suddenly be a âchanged individual.â It is a skill that requires the right temperament, the right mindset, and a willingness to constantly work at it. It has no bearing on whether your job title implies leadership like Marketing Director, Manager, or Lead Project Developer. Everyone, regardless of title, has the power to be a leader! Some just want it and choose to work at it more than others, and some just have the personality traits that are more conducive to leadership.
Leaders become such for many reasons as we have touched on. But many times people become leaders due to the influences around them and exposure to responsibility at a young age. In a family business, siblings may be a part of the operation and learn the nuts and bolts by simply being there and watching mom and dad. They develop leadership traits by following the example they see every day, and by being around that environment. Sometimes itâs simple social interaction that develops these traits, and some individuals choose to run with that more than others. To me, this is where it all begins, and you can learn a lot about a person by simply talking about their upbringing and early childhood. If you were born into a family business, then there is a distinct advantage and blessing you have that others do not. Learning leadership by watching it first-hand is worth its weight in gold! The only downside to learning that way is that the âold schoolâ method of leadership doesnât always gel in todayâs environment. You have to know how to evolve. Thatâs where you have to ask yourself first and foremost what exactly strong, adaptive, and thought-out leadership is to you. If somebody were to come up to you and ask for a definition, what would you say?
When you pick up Websterâs Dictionary and look up âLeadershipâ, it will tell you this: The act or instance of leading, the power or ability to lead other people.
Well, Iâm pretty sure we can agree thereâs more to it than that. While there are certainly going to be different perceptions of what leadership is, I think itâs a given that strong leadership is about inspiring people, and good leaders certainly know how to achieve and reach pre-determined goals. To me, a good leader is one who understands his or her own limitations, knows how to utilize their teamâs talent to its full potential, and does so in a humble, authentic, and sincere way. When youâre in a family business, itâs important to exercise qualities that earn you respect. You must demonstrate humility, and at the same time use your intuition to inspire people to follow. Itâs about being a servant to the people who work for you, and giving them the tools they need to succeed.
